Oracle Solaris 11 User's Guide for the GNOME Desktop describes how to configure, customize, and use the features of the Oracle Solaris Desktop. Most of the information in this guide is generic to all releases of the desktop. Where the information is not generic, the platform is indicated.
This release of the desktop supports systems running the Oracle Solaris 11 operating system on SPARC and x86 platforms.
This guide is for users, system administrators, and anyone who is interested in using the Oracle Solaris Desktop.
This guide is structured in this manner:
Chapter 1, Getting Started With the Desktop introduces you to some of the basic components of the desktop. These components include windows, workspaces, and applications. This chapter also provides information needed to log in to and shut down the desktop, and to start, manage, and end a desktop session.
Chapter 2, Using the Desktop Windows describes the desktop windows, the different types of windows available, and how to work with windows.
Chapter 3, Using the Desktop Workspaces describes workspaces, and how to manage the workspaces available on the Oracle Solaris Desktop.
Chapter 4, Using the Desktop Panels describes how to add, customize, and use the panels at the top and bottom of the Oracle Solaris Desktop.
Chapter 5, Using the Desktop Applications describes the standard desktop applications and how to create, open, and save files and folders.
Chapter 6, Using the Main Menubar describes how to use the desktop panel menubar.
Chapter 7, Using Time Slider describes how to restore individual files or directories from automatically scheduled, incremental snapshots of home directories.
Chapter 8, Using the File Manager describes how to organize and search your files, connect to remove servers, and burn CDs.
Chapter 9, Using the Desktop Tools and Utilities describes what you can do with some of the tools and utilities on the desktop, such as take a screenshot or browse help documentation.
Chapter 10, Configuring the Desktop describes how to use the preference tools to customize the desktop.
Appendix A, Using the Mouse describes the mouse actions and the different mouse pointers.
Appendix B, Using the Keyboard describes how to use the keyboard and the shortcut keys that you can use throughout the desktop and applications.
